As a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, you will work as an autonomous practitioner within the multidisciplinary team, assessing, treating and managing patients with neurological disorders including (but not limited to) acquired brain injury, prolonged disorders of consciousness (PDOC), neuro-oncology, spinal injury and progressive disorders (e.g. multiple sclerosis). You will be working on a 42 bed, dedicated neurological rehabilitation unit, with full provision of therapy equipment and robotic capabilities. You will deliver highly specialist skills in acquired communication disorders, AAC, dysphagia, instrumental assessment and tracheostomy management, working alongside Rehabilitation and Neurology Consultants who are experts in their field. As an SLT you will follow the patient through their rehabilitation journey which may involve supporting them in ICU.


This role will report directly to the Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapist and be part of a highly innovative, evidence based, forward thinking neurological therapy team. You will also have line management responsibility for SLT’s and other Caregivers and will motivate, empower, coach and develop team members through supervision and appraisal frameworks.

What we need from you:
• Recognised Speech and Language Therapy Degree qualification or equivalent
• Experience in Speech and Language Therapy in neuro-rehabilitation and neurosurgery
• Experiential post graduate learning and development of specialist skills such as Videofluoroscopy assessment and Fibreoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow
• Experience of prolonged disorders of consciousness and tracheostomy management desirable
• Experience of specialist assessment and intervention for complex dysphagia, including implementation of risk feeding protocols
• Experience of specialist assessment and intervention for acquired communication impairments, including cognitive communication disorders, using current literature and best practice
• Experience of delivering impairment-based and functional interventions to facilitate rehabilitation of communication and use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC)
• Extensive experience of multidisciplinary / multi agency working at senior level including in the context of mental capacity assessment
• Experience of audit, quality improvement, clinical effectiveness and project planning
• Experience of supervision, appraisal, development and managing performance including competency development and the provision of training relevant to specialist area
• Experience of delivering multidisciplinary education and training
• Experience of empowering and engaging patients to make informed decisions over their care
