Hours are usually 9am – 4:30pm and include paid breaks. Hourly rate is £16.61ph and annual leave for permanent qualified staff is up to 260 hours per annum.

Full Time/Part Time perm or Part Time Locum

The Speech and Language Therapist is responsible for providing treatment and support to adults with neurological conditions, who may present with difficulties on swallowing, communication and have tracheostomy care needs.

Key Responsibilities:
1. To undertake Speech and Language assessments of residents with a range of complex neurological and clinical conditions.
2. To work as part of a multidisciplinary team, liaising and advising nurses, other Allied Healthcare Professionals, Speech and Language Therapy Assistant, Healthcare Assistants, doctors and family members or carers, when developing treatment goals and plans.
3. To provide advice, support and training to all staff with regard to communication difficulties and swallowing disorders, including specific training to individual residents.
4. To positively promote the Marillac Neurological Care Centre’s values.
5. To be confident to work autonomously and as part of a team.

1. Resident Care
1.1 To provide a high quality person-centred approach to care delivery, which always considers the resident’s safety, privacy and dignity.
1.2 To provide clinically effective, person centred and evidence-based Speech and Language Therapy assessment and intervention to residents with neurological conditions or palliative care needs.
1.3 To demonstrate clinical effectiveness by use of evidence-based practice and outcome measures.
1.4 To devise specialist programmes of care for other professionals to deliver and ensure they are delivered appropriately.
1.6 To be aware by constant observation of changes in residents physical and emotional wellbeing and reporting to relevant senior member of staff.
1.7 To liaise with relevant team members as well as external bodies for a safe, timely, and smooth transitional approach to discharge planning.
1.8 To be able to deal with body fluids e.g. saliva, sputum, urine and unpleasant body odours, and to work in potentially infectious environment, taking responsibility for your role in infection prevention and control both for your own protection and of your colleagues, and the protection of the patients.

2. Administration and Documentation
2.1 To ensure that all reporting and documentation of a resident is filled out thoroughly and accurately and updated immediately, for it to be actioned safely. Maintain records as required, including the writing of reports and liaison with commissioning bodies, should this be necessary.
2.2 To ensure that The Marillac Policies and Procedures, relevant legislation and registration requirements are complied with.
2.3 Attend regular MDT meetings and any other meetings, when required.
2.5 Communicate with colleagues keeping them up to date with any changes to residents that they should be made aware of.
2.6 Provide and receive complex and sensitive information.
2.7 To be able to problem solve and show leadership and organisational skills.

3. Research & Development Responsibilities
3.1 To undertake specialised training to enhance and keep professional skills updated, accounting for the changing needs of the service.
3.2 To undertake staff training programmes, including yearly mandatory training.
3.3 To evaluate care, taking appropriate action leading to improvement in quality standards through clinical audit, root cause analysis and dealing with complaints.
3.4 To be supported and enabled in personal development and skills through Annual Appraisal and supervision.
3.5 To participate in the development and delivery of specialist training.

4. Personnel
4.1 Develop a healthy, positive attitude towards respecting residents' wishes, choice, abilities and needs, their relationships, social activities and decision making.
4.2 To communicate effectively in verbal and written form in the exchange of highly complex, sensitive, or contentious information in difficult situations using de-escalation, mediation, resolution and professional Duty of Candour.
4.3 To comply with the Marillac's Policies and Procedures, including Health & Safety requirements to ensure a safe working environment, by bringing any identified risk to the attention of the Facilities Manager following the Incident, Serious Incidents and Near Misses reporting policy and procedure.
4.4 To maintain desired standards of behaviour, dress and general appearance, according to the Centre’s policies and with particular sensitivity to the needs of the residents.
4.4 To integrate into your practice the Values of The Marillac NCC.
4.5 To understand the requirement for confidentiality in all matters relating to residents/staff team members.
4.6 To provide clinical supervision and mentor junior members of the team.
4.7 To respect and apply the requirements of equality and diversity, promoting and role modelling these across the multi-disciplinary team.
4.8 Challenge poor practice and take appropriate action, according to the Centre’s policies.
4.9 Ensure that personal performance meets job requirements and Professional Codes and Standards.

The job description will also be subject to change in line with the needs of the Centre.
Staff will be expected to carry out their duties in line with their terms and conditions and contract of employment, the standards stated in the staff handbook and will be required to follow The Marillac Neurological Care Centre policies and procedures.
Staff have a contractual duty to ensure that mandatory training is current and will be expected to participate and undertaken further developmental training specific to their role.
