The Speech and Language Therapy Service in Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust is continuing to develop and grow to meet the needs of our patients and local communities. We are looking for committed and passionate individuals with different levels of qualifications and clinical knowledge and experience to join our team. Our current vacancies include: Assistant Practitioners, Speech and Language Therapists, Specialist Speech and Language Therapists and Advanced Speech and Language Therapists.

You will join a large, dynamic team of Speech and Language Therapy colleagues in established, multi-disciplinary teams who are committed to providing the best quality service to our patients. We actively encourage professional development and provide opportunities for all in the Speech and Language Therapy team to contribute to the development of the service.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a full time, permanent, Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual, who is keen to develop their skills, to join the Speech and Language Therapy service as a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist. This post will work with adults with learning disabilities in the community and also with Working Age Adults & Older Peoples’ Services within a Mental Health Inpatient setting.

This post will be based and provide Speech and Language Therapy to the following areas:

The Community Team for Learning Disabilities based at Benton House, Newcastle upon Tyne
The Mental Health Inpatient settings at:
St Nicholas Hospital, Newcastle
St Georges Park Hospital, Morpeth
These services provide assessment, intervention and an MDT approach/care co-ordination services to adults who have a learning disability, challenging behaviour and/or mental health needs and require specialist Speech & Language Therapy input for communication and/or dysphagia needs.

The successful candidate will have a particular interest and enthusiasm to work in this area. You should have qualifications and experience relevant in this clinical field and work well as part of a close team and be able to work independently. You will liaise closely with fellow professionals to address communication and eating/drinking difficulties as part of a holistic, service user centred service. You will contribute to, write and review care plans and provide high quality service user centred care. You will have a varied caseload, working in day centres and clients’ homes with opportunities to contribute to a range of wider projects within the community setting and into a variety of wards within inpatient settings.

You will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills and be able to contribute to the existing multi-disciplinary team. A qualification in dysphagia is desirable, but not essential as support will be given for dysphagia training as required.

Robust supervision arrangements and appraisal will facilitate opportunities for continuing professional development to develop your skills and knowledge.

You will be required to travel to other sites across the Trust as part of the role.
