Join the team at Thornford Park Hospital, where you will be providing specialist Speech and Language Therapy assessments, differential diagnosis, and treatment for adult males with ASD and/or Learning Disability within a secure forensic service. You will be supporting them to develop their communication skills and build a brighter future.

You will know one or two things about communication as you lead group therapeutic group sessions, helping them develop and improve their speech. Although you will be supporting service users in a group setting, you will be able to build one-to-one rapport with each service users, ensuring they are engaging in the session and are progressing positively through their treatment plan.

Role - Speech & Language Therapist

Location - Thatcham, Berkshire

Salary - Up to £40,000

Hours - 37.5, Full-Time

Your responsibilities

To provide specialist education, training and advice to service users, carers, other health care professionals, students, and voluntary organisations.
To demonstrate specialist skills in dealing with complex cases, cultural and linguistic differences, and to generate appropriate strategies for caseload management.
To work as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure inter-professional care for service users with communication and other disorders.
To be involved in undertaking audit and contributing to research in the provision of treatment, to people with communication and other disorders.
To provide specialist assessment, differential diagnosis and appropriate, clearly planned SLT intervention and discharge planning for people with a wide range of disorders within the service, in line with empirical research and RCSLT Clinical Guidelines.
To demonstrate specialist knowledge in the areas of acquired communication and swallowing disorders underpinned by current evidence-based practice.
To adapt assessment and intervention techniques to the needs of the individual people on an ongoing basis, including the use of augmentative and alternative communication systems as appropriate.
To contribute to the assessment and information-gathering regarding service users’ mental capacity and ability to give informed consent with support from senior colleagues, and to assist service user's to maximise their independence in decision-making and communicating their wishes.
To work closely with all appropriate agencies and multi-disciplinary colleagues to ensure comprehensive management of service users’ SLT needs, providing written and verbal reports as appropriate, enabling all parties involved to fully understand the nature of the service user's communication and swallowing disorders.
To provide information which may be complex to service user's, carers and families in an empathic manner which enables and ensures their understanding (people will frequently have communication and/or cognitive difficulties as well as emotional difficulty accepting the information being provided), observing data protection guidelines.
Where you will be working

Location: Thornford Park, Crookham Hill, Thatcham, Berkshire, RG19 8ET

You will be working at Thornford Park, a 130 bedded independent hospital that supports service users that require medium and low secure Forensic Mental Health Services. In addition to these services, there is also a PICU Mental Health Service.

The service provides a seamless internal care pathway supporting and empowering people in their recovery and rehabilitation.

Working alongside the multidisciplinary team, you will provide personalised assessment and treatment programmes for males with mental illness/complex care needs as well as those with personality disorder and females and males in a PICU service.
