I CAN is the children’s communication charity and our vision is a world where all children have the communication skills they need to fulfil their potential. Serving children and families for 130 years, I CAN today consists of two special schools, Meath School (Surrey) and Dawn House School (East Midlands); a social enterprise that develops and distributes a wide range of materials, training packages and interventions across the nation; the I CAN Help portfolio of information and advice for parents, carers and practitioners; and is the host for The Communication Trust, a consortium of over 50 organisations in the field of communications. I CAN’s mission is that no child should be left out or left behind because of a difficulty speaking or understanding.

This is an exciting time to join our organisation. We are seeking an experienced speech and language adviser to work on multiple projects across the organisation as part of a well-established team of speech and language specialists across England.

Reporting into one of our directors, the successful candidate will enjoy working across the organisation in leading on a variety of work, including:
•A national programme aimed at health visitors to increase their understanding of children’s speech,
language and communications needs.
•The delivery of training in relation to the abovementioned health visitors project.
•A programme of continuous professional development in an opportunity area in Norfolk.
•Various programmes to reduce disadvantage to children with speech, language and communication
needs (SLCN).
•Supporting any associates, consultants and other staff members, as required to ensure contracts are
fulfilled.

The successful candidate would be based in our central London office and would need to demonstrate in their application and, if invited, at interview:
•Experience and qualifications relating to children and young people’s speech, language and
communication needs (SLCN), preferably with a masters degree, or equivalent.
•Membership of a relevant professional body or significant experience.
•A background in speech and language therapy or an education background with significant e
experience of working with children’s SLCN.
•Experience of leading, monitoring and evaluating projects.
•Experience of effective cross-organisational and cross-agency work.
•A self-starter with the ability to hit the ground running.
•Experience of developing and delivering training, sometimes to non-specialist audiences.
•A strong awareness of current issues and initiatives in special education, and in the field of SLCN.
